When people think about business networking, they often think about handing out business cards, giving a 60-second pitch and hoping for a referral.

But that’s not what great networking is about.

Now, in our thirteenth year of running Business Networking North London (BNNL), I’ve come to realise something much more powerful.

The people sitting around the table become your marketing team.

Think about it for a moment.

Every member around the table is out meeting clients, suppliers, friends, family, colleagues and other business owners every single day. They hear conversations you’ll never hear and meet people you’ll never meet.

If they understand who you are, what you do and the difference you make, they’ll naturally start talking about your business when opportunities arise.

That’s marketing you simply can’t buy.

Relationships Come Before Referrals

One of the biggest mistakes people make when joining a networking group is expecting immediate results.

Networking isn’t about asking, “What can I get today?”

It’s about asking, “How can I add value?”

The strongest referrals come from genuine relationships, and relationships take time to build.

When people know you, trust you and understand your values, they feel confident recommending you to others.

That’s why consistency matters.

The more regularly you attend, the more people get to know your business and the easier it becomes for them to recognise opportunities on your behalf.

Add Value Before You Expect Value

The most successful networkers aren’t always the loudest people in the room.

They’re the ones who support others.

They make introductions.

They share knowledge.

They celebrate successes.

They offer encouragement.

They ask thoughtful questions.

They genuinely care about helping others grow.

When you contribute to the success of the group, the group naturally wants to contribute to yours.

Networking isn’t a transaction.

It’s a relationship built on trust, generosity and mutual support.

Your Network Becomes Your Team

Running a business can sometimes feel lonely.

Many business owners work from home or spend long hours making decisions on their own.

A good networking group changes that.

You suddenly have people who understand the challenges of running a business.

People who celebrate your wins.

People who encourage you when things don’t go to plan.

People who recommend trusted suppliers.

People who share ideas, offer advice and become a sounding board when you need one.

In many ways, your networking group becomes your colleagues.

Not because you work for the same company, but because you’re all working towards the same goal—building successful businesses while supporting one another along the way.

Choosing the Right Networking Group Matters

Not every networking group is the right fit, and that’s okay.

Some groups focus purely on numbers and referrals.

Others focus on community.

Before joining any networking group, ask yourself:

  • Do I feel welcome?
  • Can I be myself?
  • Are people genuinely interested in one another?
  • Is there a culture of support rather than competition?
  • Would I enjoy spending time with these people?

Because networking shouldn’t feel like a chore.

It should feel like joining a community where people genuinely want to see you succeed.

More Than Business

At Business Networking North London, we’ve always believed that networking is about people first and business second.

Of course referrals are important, and many of our members have generated significant business through the relationships they’ve built.

But the real magic happens because those relationships come first.

Over the years, I’ve watched members collaborate on projects, recommend one another with confidence, celebrate milestones, support each other through difficult times and form friendships that extend far beyond our monthly meetings.

That’s something you won’t find in an online directory or through an algorithm.

The Best Marketing Is a Recommendation

The most powerful form of marketing has always been a personal recommendation.

No advert, social media post or sales email carries the same weight as someone saying:

“I know someone who can help you.”

That’s exactly what happens when you become part of the right networking community.

You stop marketing your business alone.

You have a room full of people who understand what you do, believe in what you do and are proud to recommend you.

A Seat Around the Table Could Change Your Business

At BNNL, we don’t just build networks, we build relationships.

We believe in supporting one another, celebrating success and creating opportunities through genuine human connection.

If you’re looking for more than just another networking event, if you’re looking for a community that becomes your biggest advocates, we’d love to welcome you around the table.

Because when you find the right networking group, you don’t just gain contacts.

You gain a team. To find out more message France
